Young s Modulus of Single and Double Walled Carbon Nanocones Using Finite Element Method(TECHNICAL NOTE)
Authors
Abstract:
In this paper a three-dimensional finite element (FE) model of carbon nanocones (CNCs) is proposed and used for obtaining Young\'s modulus of CNCs. In this model, stretching and bending forces between carbon atoms are simulated using truss elements in ANSYS software. Then the model is subjected to the tension and by obtaining the stiffness of the CNC and using elasticity theory, Young’s modulus is calculated. The results showed that for a fixed length of CNC, the modulus increase with the increase in diameter whereas it decreases by increasing the apex angle. Also, Young’s modulus of double walled carbon nanocoes (DWCNCs) obtained between the values of each layer. Furthermore, it is showed that elastic modulus can be effected by defects and their positions in CNC.

Inelastic Continuum Modeling of Carbon Nanotube,s Behavior Using Finite Element Method
This paper describes a continuum model for analyzing the inelastic behavior of a single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) in different loading conditions. Because of limitations in using molecular dynamics (and other atomic methods) to model the failure load of the SWCNT, continuum mechanics methods are considered in this paper. Based on some experimental and theoretical results, an elasto-plastic...

The multi-scale finite element method is used to study the vibrational characteristics of polymer matrix reinforced by single-walled silicon carbide nanotubes. For this purpose, the nanoscale finite element method is employed to simulate the nanotubes at the nanoscale. While, the polymer is considered as a continuum at the larger scale. The polymer nanotube interphase is simulated by spring ele...

Application of impact energy absorption systems in different industries is of special significance. Thin-walled tubes, due to their lightness, high energy absorption capacity, long crushing length and the high ratio of energy absorption to weight, have found ever-increasing application as one of the most effective energy absorption systems. In this research, through carrying out experimental t...

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are hollow, long cylinders with extremely large aspect ratios, made of one atomic sheet of carbon atoms in a honeycomb lattice. They possess extraordinary thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties and are considered as one of the most promising nanomaterials for applications and basic research. This chapter describes the structural, electronic, vibra...
